Please enjoy another perfect review of The Thompson House family resort.

“We’re both city kids and my wife wanted one of those retro Catskills vacations from our childhood. We found Thompson House online, saw good reviews and figured “why not?” Given a previous vacation in the general area, I didn’t expect much and man, was I wrong.

You’ll hear that the place is dated, but that’s not the case at all. The entire place is fastidiously clean. Not a leaf out of place, not an errant stain anywhere. Seriously, if it was dated, then the wallpaper in the room would have a stain *somewhere* or furniture wouldn’t be in perfect repair. But it’s not dated – it’s decorated in keeping with the area. It’s also as well maintained as anywhere I’ve ever stayed. Not a chip or scuff to be found anywhere. Even the games they have out for guests are in great shape.

I’m a bit of a snob. I know this. I’m a trained chef, so I’m even more of a food snob and I also didn’t expect much in the way of food. Seriously, I thought we’d be getting reheated Budget Gourmets or something. Again, I couldn’t have been more wrong. The food was REALLY good, well prepared, varied and plenty. They even do all their own baking on premise, which is really kind of cool. I was shocked at how good it was and how nice the dining room was, too.

The thing that makes all this tick though are the people who work here. They’re just amazing. From the housekeeping staff that keeps Thompson House clean and serviceable to the server who knew what all your preferences were by your second seating, they’re all invested in making sure your stay is the best it can be.

We go to Disney a lot and I tend to use that as the gold standard to measure other hotels and resorts with. While it’s obviously not Disney, I can honestly say that Thompson House as good as any place we’ve stayed. If there’s a drawback, it’s that they don’t have a liquor license. If you wish to have an adult beverage with dinner, you’ll have to bring it with you.”

A Long Fall Night

This off season has been one of the busiest we’ve had in a long time. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we had two months to renovate the Evergreen to prepare for opening this winter season. The lobby looks amazing, and the office area allows us to function much more efficiently. Three rooms were also refreshed, with new paint and some new furniture. We could not be more pleased with how all the hard work came out.

John and Mickey are in good health. They still take Benson for a walk around the Windham Path every day the weather permits. All of their children, most of their grandchildren and lots of their great-grandchildren came over for Christmas breakfast.

Eric and Debbie spent the fall overseeing the renovations. It was a long and difficult process, but it all worked out in the end. They’ve been spending a lot of time with Maddox and Aiden. The kids are learning the tools of the trade, including fixing just about everything.

Kurt, Dasha, Maddox, and Aiden are all doing well. They made their annual trip to Russia to visit their family. All summer Maddox kept telling us how excited he is to start Kindergarten. He loves his teacher and is having lots of fun with his classmates. Aiden is getting bigger each day and is not afraid of anything. Dasha was promoted from her seasonal receptionist job at the Manager of Alpine Spa.

Brent has continued to do work on his house and adopted a dog. Bella is a 7-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix. She is doing a great job at keeping Brent company at all times. Seriously, Brent does not have any privacy in his house anymore. Bella gets along well with Maddox, Aiden, and even Benson.

Evan is working at Windham Mountain again this winter. When he isn’t working, he spends a lot of time snowboarding. Evan has developed a passion for photography, video, and editing both. He has been a big help with the renovations and getting us open for the winter season.

Even after a jam-packed fall we still have plans to do some projects this spring. Last summer we replaced all of the furniture in the Main Building rooms and converted some to King rooms, and this spring we’ll do more renovations to Main Building rooms. For more updates visit our website, sign up for our e-mail list, like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram and Twitter.

The Thompson House opens for our 138th summer season on May 25, 2018. Hopefully, we’ll see you and your family this season. If you haven’t already made your reservation for this summer, please call us at 518-734-4510 or send an e-mail to info@ThompsonHouse.com.

After taking a year off, winter has returned to the Catskill Mountains. We’ve had cold weather and snow since Thanksgiving, which is a welcome change from last year. According to the weatherman, we did have average snowfall this winter. There were over 2 feet of snow on the ground at one point, and the kids enjoyed every minute outside. Winter is coming to an end, and the weather is already starting to change. As we sit down to write this letter the weatherman is predicting we’ll have a record high-temperature today. 70o in February is very unusual for us.

With great sadness, we need to let everyone know that Joanne’s daughter, Krystal, passed away in January.  She had beaten Breast Cancer a few years earlier, but this last year cancer got into her liver and spread before chemo could get ahead of it.  Krystal was a young, hard working, ICU Nurse at Albany Medical Center for 20 years and is greatly missed by her many friends and relatives.

Here at The Thompson House, we’ve kept busy doing various renovations around the property, some roofs, and some bathrooms. Currently, we’re working in the Manor House redesigning some spaces to make better use of all that area.

We’re grateful for all the guests who were able to join us last summer. Whether it was to be part of a reunion, play golf, go hiking, or just relax by the pool, we hope you enjoyed your time in the Great Northern Catskills. It was also great to have you be part of our Thompson House “family.”

We are all blessed to be in good health. John and Mickey still go out for their exercise daily. They’re also busy helping volunteer organizations in the community and visiting friends and neighbors that can’t get out anymore. Although they no longer take their annual trip down south, they do enjoy short excursions with a local senior club and going off on their own.

Just last week we were excited to celebrate Aiden’s 1st birthday. He’s very fast on his feet and likes to get into everything. He’s doing his best to keep up with Maddox and Lada, and they’ll be running the games before you know it.

Deb and Eric are enjoying having their grandchildren over. They’ve forgotten how much fun it is to have little ones running around the house, and how exhausting it is.

Dasha, Kurt, Maddox, and Aiden went to Russia in November to celebrate Dasha’s Grandmother’s 90th birthday. It was Aiden’s first trip to Russia, and Maddox enjoyed introducing his little brother to everyone.

Brent and Evan are both doing well. Brent is finding out all the wonders of being a homeowner and making daily trips to the hardware store. Evan decided he wanted to spend his winter in Windham and has been working at Windham Mountain as a “Ski Technician.” His plan was to spend the winter snowboarding, but that came to an end when he broke his wrist snowboarding over Christmas Vacation.  The surgeon was pleased with his work, and he hopes for a full recovery.

Our doors open on May 26th this year for our 137th season, and hope you, your families and friends will join us for fun and relaxation in the Great Northern Catskills.  Give us a call at 518-734-4510 or send us an e-mail to info@thompsonhouse.com  if we can assist in setting up your vacation plans.

Warm regards,

The Goettsche Families

It was a beautiful July 4th, 2016 in the great Northern Catskills this year. Thank you to all the guests who were able to join us at The Thompson House. If you weren’t able to join us this year, we hope to see you next year.

Beautiful Weather

The weather before and after the 4th was amazing in 2016. The sun was out most of the time, the temperature was warm and consistent, and everyone was loving the pool. People enjoyed time on the golf course and spending time on our NEW miniature putting course.

Start a Tradition

There were 3 generations of some families here, grandparents, parents and grandchildren. It is amazing to think that another generation of The Thompson House guests will soon be running around and playing games, just like their parents did 20 something years ago, and their parent before them.

Parade

The parade put on by the Windham Hose Company was excellent as always. The Thompson House’s float this year was… Finding Dory. You can see most of the parade in the photos below, as well as some of the guests who were able to join us. Next year we hope to see you in these photos.

Season of Family 3

Aiden Eric Goettsche

February 23, 2016

Dasha and Kurt welcome a new member to their family. Aiden Eric Goettsche, a baby boy, born February 23, 2016. Dasha and Aiden are both doing well. Kurt is enjoying having someone new to tell jokes to. Maddox loves his little brother, and holds Aiden every time he gets a chance.

We are all doing well up here even though it still gets a little chilly at night.  John and Mickey did not make their usual trip to Florida this winter and opted instead for a 2 week cruise.  Lucky for them they were 1 week ahead of that recent famous cruise that encountered those 30 foot waves.  They did “a lot of nothing” and came home safely.  Brent and Evan are also doing well.  Brent purchased his first house last fall and is learning all the ins and outs of home renovation.  Evan is a coach at the EF Academy near Thornwood, New York  and is very proud of his undefeated soccer team.

Last  fall, Eric, Deb, Kurt, Dasha and Maddox enjoyed a wonderful trip to Russia.  The first week we stayed in Kovrov – Dasha’s home town. We had fun walking to the local markets and took some day trips around the region visiting the historic cities of Suzdal and Nizhny-Nougorod.  From Kovrov we took an overnight train to St. Petersburgh and had 4 days to see all the museums and even the ballet, Swan Lake.  From there a high speed train took us to Moscow for more sightseeing and visiting with more family and friends.  It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Here at The Thompson House we are always trying to improve our property.  We finally said good bye to the green and white mini-bus and bought a larger van for trips around the mountain top.  The 18 hole putting green was removed last fall and Eric is attempting to build his own miniature golf course.  It may just be a few holes to start but will still hope to be fun for the whole family.  Also, for our guests’ that have enjoyed the popular Windham Path, plans are in the works to extend it all the way to Hensonville and west along South St. to Windham Mt. And – for our biking enthusiasts, more single track trails are being built near the Escarpment Trail area and Windham Mt. has plans to build 2 more downhill bike trails

We open our doors on May 27th this year for our 136th season and hope you and your families and friends will join us for fun and relaxation in the Great Northern Catskills.

Regards,

The Goettsche Families
